Dr Julio Vaquerizo MD MSc

Consultant Child & Adolescent and Adult Psychiatrist

Dr Julio Vaquerizo is a Consultant Child & Adolescent and Adult Psychiatrist (medical doctor) and graduated in medicine from the University of Alcalá (Madrid) and specialised in general psychiatry at the Gregorio Marañón Hospital (Madrid), where he worked intensively with both young people and adults treating various mental health conditions, including neurodevelopmental disorders such as ADHD and Autism.

Dr Vaquerizo is an enthusiastic, motivated and passionate clinician, who stands out for his empathy and warmth as well as his ability to engage with his patients and their families.

Prior to joining The Giaroli Centre, Dr Vaquerizo practised at the prestigious Maudsley Hospital (South London & Maudsley (SLaM) NHS Trust), working in a variety of highly specialised NHS Tier 4 Services at the Michael Rutter Centre, including the Child & Adolescent Adoption and Fostering Service (CAFT) and the Centre for Interventional Paediatric Psychopharmacology and Rare Diseases (CIPPRD). Additionally, he worked in the Child & Adolescent Psychiatric Intensive Care Unit (CAMHS PICU) at the Bethlem Royal Hospital (London) and also within the liaison team at King’s College Hospital, where he evaluated and treated patients with a wide variety of mental health conditions.

Dr Vaquerizo holds a master’s degree in forensic psychiatry from Complutense University (Madrid) as well as a master’s degree in mood disorders from the University of Alcalá (Madrid) and a master’s degree in child and adolescent psychiatry, from the University of Barcelona.

Alongside Dr Vaquerizo’s work with children and adolescents, he has extensive experience in adults. In this regard, he has worked in various mental health teams for adults, including an adult inpatient ward, an outpatient clinic, an adult psychiatric emergency department, an adult liaison psychiatry team, and a specialised clinical unit for the management of patients with Autism, (Comprehensive Medical Care for people with Autism).

In 2019, Dr Vaquerizo was awarded a two-year advanced training fellowship to continue his education in child and adolescent psychiatry at both the Institute of Psychiatry King’s College London (IoPPN) and at the prestigious Maudsley Hospital (South London & Maudsley (SLaM) NHS Trust) where he was involved in clinical and research functions, working within the departments of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry and Psychosis Studies, providing care to both young people and adults respectively. Furthermore, during his time at the IoPPN, Dr Vaquerizo provided tutoring to students undertaking a masters degree in child and adolescent mental health, offering academic support and guidance for their assignments, as well as supervising their dissertations.

Dr Vaquerizo collaborates in our centre’s multidisciplinary setting which delivers the ADOS-2 (Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule) and ADI-R (Autism Diagnostic Interview Revised)  or 3Di (Developmental, Dimensional & Diagnostic Interview) as pioneered by the Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children, for formal diagnoses of Autism where required in addition to providing treatment with both psychopharmacological interventions through medication and psychotherapy.

Dr Vaquerizo’s other clinical skills include his extensive training in Dialectical Behavioural Therapy, Behavioural Therapy for Tics and Tourette’s Syndrome, and in child and adolescent psychopharmacology. In terms of psychotherapy, Dr Vaquerizo has also been trained in Acceptance & Commitment Therapy by the Association for Psychological Therapies.

Dr Vaquerizo has contributed to numerous scientific manuscripts and has published in multiple peer-reviewed medical journals, including: ‘Autism Spectrum Disorder and Clinical High Risk for Psychosis’, (Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders); ‘Systematic Review and Meta-analysis: Efficacy of Pharmacological Interventions for Irritability and Emotional Dysregulation in Autism Spectrum Disorder and Predictors of Response’, (Journal of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry); ‘Catatonia in autism spectrum disorders: A systematic review and meta-analysis’, (European Psychiatry), and ‘A systematic review and meta‐analysis investigating the impact of childhood adversities on the mental health of LGBT+ youth’, (The Journal of Child Psychology and Psychiatry). Dr Vaquerizo has participated in countless national and international congresses and conferences.

Dr Vaquerizo’s General Medical Council (GMC) registration is 7758611 and is both a Section 12 (2) Approved and Approved Clinician under the Mental Health Act.
