Consultant Child & Adolescent Psychiatrist
Dr Pretesh Shah is a Consultant Child & Adolescent Psychiatrist (medical doctor) who specialises in neurodevelopmental conditions (such as ADHD and Autism) and he is the Lead Consultant Child & Adolescent Psychiatrist in Bexley Child & Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS NHS London) in a tier 3.5 team where he sees young people with significant mental illnesses.
Dr Shah also works alongside Dr Omer Moghraby here at The Giaroli Centre as well as in his NHS role.
He originally trained with the Severe, Complex and Associated Neurodevelopmental Disorders (SCAND) team at the prestigious Michael Rutter Centre treating children with ADHD and Autism, and with the Autism & Related Disorders (ARD) Team at St Thomas’ Hospital and the Evelina London Children’s Hospital. He has also worked in local London child and adolescent mental health service (CAMHS) neurodevelopmental teams, helping children with ADHD or Autism, as well as in a children’s inpatient settings.
Throughout his clinical work, Dr Shah has seen a significant number of young people with undiagnosed or late diagnoses of their ADHD or Autism which has exacerbated their difficulties or affected their ability to access appropriate help. As a result Dr Shah believes strongly in early diagnosis and intervention and is a keen proponent in the holistic and multidisciplinary approach to assessment and management.
Dr Shah collaborates in our centre’s multidisciplinary setting which delivers the ADOS-2 (Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule) and ADI-R (Autism Diagnostic Interview Revised) or 3Di (Developmental, Dimensional & Diagnostic Interview) as pioneered by the Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children, for formal diagnoses of Autism where required.
His research efforts have also lead to his involvement in a clinical trial at the Institute of Psychiatry Kings College London (IOPPN) to research the use of arbaclofen medication in youths with Autism.
Dr Shah completed his undergraduate medical training at St. George’s Hospital, London in 2007. He also has a bachelor degree in clinical hypnotherapy and a masters in the control of infectious diseases which he completed before embarking on his training in psychiatry in Liverpool and London. He completed his training in Child & Adolescent Psychiatry at the prestigious South London and Maudsley Training Scheme (SLaM) and is on the GMC specialty register for child and adolescent psychiatry.
His interests also include studying the effects of digital media use in young people and which lead to his involvement with the Gaming The Mind charity and the Maudsley Psychedelic Society.
Dr Shah’s General Medical Council (GMC) registration is 6141514 and he is a member of the Royal College of Psychiatrists (RCPsych).
